Opening Lead: ♥ 3
South passed originally, so the bid of 2NT shows 11-12 pts,
a balanced hand without three card support for partner’s
suit. After winning the
opening lead South tries to set up the spades, by leading the
J. West must think this
through. S seems to have the
AKJ of hearts, the J of spades (adding up to 9 pts so far). W must realize that if S gets the
lead there are nine tricks available (4 spade tricks and 2 diamond
tricks in dummy, and 2 more heart tricks in S’s hand). Therefore W must switch to clubs
immediately. W must lead the
K and out a club. E must
have the ♣A or South would have opened. Inferential thinking is very
important in play and defense!
